Since LONDON FOOTSTEPS began three years ago, the number of themed walks has increased. There is a greater choice for those who enjoy discovering the hidden history of the City and surrounding areas. If you want to join any of the walks in the current programme then contact us to book a place. Here are just a selection of our walks….and some will be included in our future programmes. INTRODUCTION TO THE CITY… always popular with those who are want a brief but interesting guide to the history of the City. THE FLOW OF HISTORY… a walk along the northern bank of the River Thames from the Tower of London to the Millennium Bridge. THE CHURCHES OF SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN… hidden away down narrow streets among the high-rise office blocks are some of the finest 17th century churches created by this genius of an architect. INK SPOTS… an appropriate theme for a walk that goes up and around the Fleet Street area, once the home of the Britain’s great newspaper industry. CRIME AND PUNISHMENT… it’s safe to walk round the streets of the City today but it hasn’t always been that way. Find out more. MURDER, MEAT AND MEDICINE… Smithfield is known today as a thriving meat market – but butchery of a different kind went on here in past centuries. Some of the victims of street crime often finished up in St. Bart’s Hospital. THE GREAT FIRE OF 1666… this is subject that is familiar to everyone – but the facts are alarming. How did it start and why did it cause so much destruction?. SPITALFIELDS…just beyond the boundary of BLOOMSBURY SQUARES… in the 17th and 18th century wealthy Londoners wanted to escape the poverty, overcrowding and squalor of the City. Many of them chose to live in homes overlooking elegant squares around Bloomsbury. WHAT ABOUT WAPPING?… by the 19th century, this area to the east of Tower Bridge was alive with dockside activity – but it was also a notorious haunt for criminals and poverty was rife. |
