GOODBYE TO THE HIGH STREET ?
Shopping is a part of all our lives but how different will it be in the future as many retail shops are forced out of business and department stores sold or close down? There is little doubt that technology will determine what happens as the country emerges from the deep and tragic consequences of coronavirus. For decades, our shopping habits and attitudes have been focused on the High Street, personal service and stores packed with merchandise ranging from luxury products to cheaper mass produced goods. But the dramatic loss of customers and crippling financial problems have led to the disappearance of many well-established department stores. So this presentation looks back over the history of shopping and the success of well-known shopping entrepreneurs in the Victorian age and their gradual decline. Can it all be blamed on the new technology which has led to such a rapid growth in on-line shopping?
